How big should the QR code be?

Rule of thumb: the code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance.

Table tent or menu (scanned at 20–40 cm): 3–4 cm.
Counter sign (about 1 metre): 8–10 cm.
Window or poster (2–3 metres): 20–30 cm.
Never smaller than 2 × 2 cm.

Print tips that make the code actually work

Most QR codes that fail were printed too small, with too little contrast, or too close to other graphics.

Dark code on a light background – not the other way round.
Leave a white margin around the code (at least four modules wide).
Laminate table tents so they survive spills and cleaning.
Add a short call to action next to it: “Scan for menu & allergens”.
Test with both iPhone and Android before printing in bulk.

A printed QR code can't be changed. If it points to a PDF, every price change means new table tents. If it points to a digital menu, you edit the content yourself and the same code keeps working.

What size should a QR code be on a table tent?
