3 tips that make it work

  1. 3–4 cm is enough on a table tent.
  2. Laminate them so they survive spills.
  3. Add “Scan for menu & allergens” next to the code.

How big should the QR code be?

Rule of thumb: the code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance.

  • Table tent or menu (scanned at 20–40 cm): 3–4 cm.
  • Counter sign (about 1 metre): 8–10 cm.
  • Window or poster (2–3 metres): 20–30 cm.
  • Never smaller than 2 × 2 cm.

Print tips that make the code actually work

Most QR codes that fail were printed too small, with too little contrast, or too close to other graphics.

  • Dark code on a light background – not the other way round.
  • Leave a white margin around the code (at least four modules wide).
  • Laminate table tents so they survive spills and cleaning.
  • Add a short call to action next to it: “Scan for menu & allergens”.
  • Test with both iPhone and Android before printing in bulk.

Print once – update the menu whenever you like

A printed QR code can't be changed. If it points to a PDF, every price change means new table tents. If it points to a digital menu, you edit the content yourself and the same code keeps working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my menu without reprinting the QR code?
Yes – as long as the code points to a digital menu rather than a PDF file. With the free digital menu at menu.qms.tools you edit dishes, prices and allergens yourself, and the QR code stays the same.
What size should a QR code be on a table tent?
3–4 cm is enough for a table tent or menu read at arm's length. For signs further away: at least one tenth of the scanning distance.
Is the QR code free?
Yes. You can create and download QR codes completely free — no signup, no watermark and no hidden costs.
Does the QR code expire?
No. The QR codes are static and never expire. As long as the content (URL, phone number etc.) is valid, the code works forever.
Do people need an app to scan?
No. Every modern phone camera reads QR codes directly. No app required.
